Barcelo Maya Palace. Mayan Riviera Wedding. Jessica & Ryan.

I vividly remember reading Jessica’s destination wedding inquiry on my blackberry this past summer… At the time I didn’t think of it as an ‘inquiry’ - it was simply the highlight of my whole week. I jumped up and down giddily in my kitchen, thinking of how amazing it would be to document their love in such paradise. And we’ve brought it to life this past week.

Jessica & Ryan complete each other. It’s been such an inspiration watching them exchange their vows. In every silent look, in every touch.

Here’s a moment with her mom, who made all the beautiful bridesmaids’ and flower girls’ dresses! Trash the Dress Creative. Mayan Riviera Barcelo.

We had even more fun than it looks.

I’m sitting here, in snowy Edmonton, anxious to share my ‘trash the dress’ beach session photos with you… I’ve decided to do things a little differently this time - and post the actual wedding & ceremony images last. Jessica & Ryan are amazing together… I just stood back and let them glow! The day after the wedding, we met at the stunning Barcelo Maya Palace beach for the ‘trash the dress’ beach photo session.mexico beach weddingtrash the dress mayan rivieracouples photos playa del carmenI love this next one…unique beach photos mexico black whiteWe met on the beach at around 4 pm, expecting sundown just after 6 pm. Little did we know, it would start raining! Of course, the first thing you pack with you when going to a Mayan Riviera wedding vacation is an umbrella. Not! In the next few photos, the warm drops are not quite a nuisance, and the light is so soft and delicious. barcelo maya palace wedding beachblack & white beach portraits weddingromantic photos destination wedding Check out this beach stroll - I love it when both bride and groom venture out to ‘trash the dress.’

Here are Jessica & Ryan falling back into the water! I wish I could show you a picture of what I looked like here - none of us had a plastic bag to protect my Canon 5D Mark II (although it’s apparently pretty water-resistant), so I emptied my big black shoulder bag, put the contents under a lawn chair on the beach, and held it right over my head, just so that I could barely see what I was shooting!  It worked, and probably got  a giggle or two out of Jessica :) trash the dress couples shoot mexicoHow cool are my brides exactly? Sun, Sand, Sizzling. Taste of First Impressions.

To say I was anxious would be an understatement. I had been to the Yucatan peninsula, and in particular, to Mayan Riviera and Playa del Carmen many times, but there’s nothing like photographing a wedding and documenting love of a beautiful couple in a place like this. A place like what?! Like this.

Vancouver January 2010 Wedding. Robyn & Graeme.

I wore the ugliest pretty sweater I could find at Value Village to this one Christmas ‘ugly sweater’ party my best friend Polina dragged me out to. Glass of wine in hand, the last thing I expected was to connect with a gorgeous bride-to-be, whose wedding was a few weeks away … and she didn’t have a photographer!

Robyn & Graeme have a story. The kind you would believe to be an urban myth if you didn’t know them, the kind that you retell to your grandkids. And their kids. I’m afraid I can’t do the story justice, but I will give you a few quick facts… They became friends in Grade 2. Some years later, Robyn was the first girl Graeme asked out … but it was for his friend! As teens, they told each other everything about the one person they like - but didn’t admit to who it was. Well, all they had to do was … point at each other! But they didn’t. They then lost touch and reconnected only in University … and 7 years later Graeme proposed! The rest is to become history…

We decided to meet in Gastown, in the character building of  Malene’s cozy studio. While Robyn was getting ready earlier in the morning, Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ came on and she casually mentioned that she loves the song and even considered it for their first dance - needless to say, I had the perfect candidate for the ‘First Look’ song to play for them on my tireless boom box!first look in gastown vancouver weddingAh! Zeina & Zak. Westin Hotel Wedding.

‘If Zeina & Zak live as heartily as they dance, they will have an incredible and prosperous life,’ I thought to myself, standing on top of a shaking chair, surrounded by dozens of glowing faces and dancing bodies, ducking and squinting away from the humongous goat skin drum by my ear. My chair wasn’t the only thing shaking, it felt as if the energy and love in the room would raise the roof! This was my first time as a wedding photographer at a Lebanese wedding. So let’s back up a little!

Having arrived to Edmonton during the coldest weekend (ever!) to document Zeina & Zak’s wedding, I was so lucky to have my dad driving me and keeping the car warm while I fluttered between Zeina’s and Zak’s ‘getting ready’ locations. I arrived just in time to witness an old Arabic tradition - Zak’s last shave as a bachelor … take a look:

last shave as single manbarber visit before weddinglebanese barber wedding traditionThe women danced and proclaimed joyous blessings ‘Ah Weeeee-ha’ and danced around the groom and his barber, who worked with the precision of a surgeon. Soon after, the men joined in, also managing to realize a sly plan to soil Zak’s face with shaving cream just as the barber finished his impeccable job!

lebanese wedding arabic traditionsAnother Lebanese wedding tradition followed, whereby the groom was to get dressed methodically by the men. His suit jacket, tie, watch, belt, and even shoes!

I was hoping for some daylight photos inside, but the tired December sun went down so quickly! We still managed to get a few shots, and here are my favourites. I like the harsh ambient light and mysterious moodiness…

Hart House Vancouver Wedding. Erin & Steve.

The first time I ever talked to Erin, something clicked. Her voice is so alive and kind - even though I couldn’t see her, I felt her smiling. As we chatted about their spontaneous decision to set the wedding date, Erin mentioned that she clicked on my website link because … she liked my name. Erin, it was that easy to win me over!

Erin and Steve’s ceremony was magical. The quiet November rain diffused the limousine’s bright headlights, collecting in a pool of yellow light on the wet asphalt. I ran from the church cover to sneak a peak at Erin - so beautiful, calm, glowing… Steve stood still at the altar, looking up to the sky, closing his eyes, filling his chest with anticipation and joy. Then their hands joined. And didn’t let go.

The intimate candlelit reception dinner at the Hart House was amazing to say the least. Erin confessed that she had a ton of fun picking out the wines to pair with each exquisite course, and it certainly showed. Just when I thought nothing in this world could tear me away from Mick’s plate of lobster ravioli, the sound of clinking glasses made me reach for my camera and bolt to Erin & Steve’s table. Lingering moments longer, a few warm words sounded, words from the heart, words from miles away, words timeless. I won’t lie about the lump in my throat. And the tears of happiness for these two.

Thank you, thank you for sharing your amazing night with us making us feel like family! Congratulations… and Erin: here’s the ‘evidence‘  :)

Sunday Confessions. 15.

Inspired by your love, created by mine…

Jen & Steve Bebb of Bebb Studios hosted Vancouver’s first SmugMug meeting this past Wednesday, and I felt so lucky to be a part of this awesome beginning. The crowd was great, and it didn’t take long for the cozy room to start buzzing with warm words and sincere handshakes. Jeff of SmugMug opened the floor by introducing the community spirit and cracking a few jokes :)

Thanks Jen for your inspiration to blog my season’s favorites… And what a challenge to boil them down to 15!

This is my favorite hands down. My best friend is getting married on my birthday…

bw bridal vancouver wedding photosI usually abstain from calling anything ‘epic,’ but this photo really has been, for my business.

katya nova vancouver weddingsIt was pouring outside. Buckets, cats, dogs & all. We were is an old barnyard and Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ was playing on my boom box. It was wild.

nova bridal vancouver photographerThis shot was taken moments before the First Look. Koranne gave me more pizzaz than I could have even hoped for, and rocked it out like a true Nova Bride.

bride on wedding day vancouver portraitPaige floated about like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn. So much grace and poise. It was starting to rain and we were about 5 min running distance from shelter, but Paige didn’t even stir, trusting that I would get the shot. Soon. The wind was blowing pretty heavily to the left, so I had my assistant Kemi pull the veil to the right and then let go so that I could catch it in mid-air!

couture bridal photography vancouverRob and I were having a conversation through the half-open door, as I was looking for good light. This is what I saw when I glanced over - and couldn’t resist. In fact, the first frame I shot only had ‘lieve’ visible, so I had to nonchalantly push the door a bit wider - to reveal the sign hanging above the bed of one of his groomsmen :) And could the light get any more perfect?!

groom getting ready bwNot a new concept by any means, but it was so spontaneous and fun! After a ‘french’ picnic of baguette, cheese, olives, and … champagne, we kicked off our shoes for some fun in the fountain. The setting August sun was tastefully diffused by the trees…

fun bridal day after photo sessionOk, the secret is out - I love giving a bit of direction and making it look like I’m catching my subjects in a more or less candid moment. Kathy looked so elegant in the white robe, so I asked her to go hang out at the foot of the bed… In the few moments of experimenting with the width of the space between the shutters, the whole gang of bridesmaids gathered behind me, curious to see why I was kneeling in such an awkward spot. ‘Awwwwww,’ I heard from them in unison - they were snapping away too!

bride getting ready wedding photographerI love the flare. And the love. This photo was taken the night before their wedding - this was the sunset marking the beginning of a new journey together. Did I mention I loooove flare?

engagement photos with flare vancouverThe sun hid for a few seconds for me to catch this shot. The air was heavy with the promise of rain. I shouted out ‘runaway bride‘ to Sarah just before releasing the shutter. The old Ukrainian-German farm was also amazing…

black white blidal field nova photographyI just love what’s going on. Not even sure how, but I convinced them to cozy up on the bed! As I looked around the room, I noticed a Marilyn Monroe calendar. Done!

unique engagement vancouver photographerClean-up on aisle four!!! Not quite… But we definitely made the day for a few bored Sobeys employees.

day after creative session vancouver‘No worries, I’m insured,’ I chuckled nervously, as Kristina and I made our way up to the second floor of this abandoned farmhouse. Every step creaked and squeaked, and I kept repeating in my head … ‘please don’t scream if you see a mouse, please don’t scream if you see a little mouse’ - all clear, we were safe. And it was so worth it! This photo was one of my favorites, we found this antique violin case…

edgy bridal portraits vancouverI think this is the kind of a moment little girls dream of when they imagine their dream wedding day. I love the energy of the shot. I was up at the front with them, and realized the bride and groom had turned around and were quickly walking towards the church front doors! I don’t think I tripped anyone… but I busted my butt to make sure I got to the door first!

Karina & Shone. Wedding.

Nina herself came to open the door … and within my very first gasp made me feel like  a tenderly awaited bridesmaid…

The boutique Presidential suite of Union Bank Inn was filled with loving smiles and soft Serbian music. I’m glad I caught Nicola Gavins on her way out - her talent in make-up artistry is incredible and it’s always such a treat to have her work magic on Nova Brides. But it wasn’t till Nina slipped into her iconic gown that I got a lump in my throat. I felt so special sharing these moments with Nina and her bestest friend Natasa. Surely, the comfort of the hotel room wasn’t enough for my devious soul - I was ready to throw Nina over my shoulder and steal her away for some bridal photos outside. This was challenging to say the least, as the groom and ‘all his people’ were at the same hotel, seeping into the ballroom for cocktails. Nina, thank you for trusting me, wearing a big purple housecoat and escaping through the parkade with me. You and Natasa rock!

I loved Nina & Shone’s ceremony - it unfolded an hour before dinner in the very same ballroom. Intimate, elegant, and simple. As the cocktails continued, I took the newlyweds and their bridal party for some photos - the air was fresh with recent light rain and falling golden leaves.

If you had any doubts that this was a Serbian wedding, you just had to stand still for a moment to feel the dancing-vibrating floor all the way up in your face - it was a blast!

Nina, you sweep me off my feet. Thank you for being so selfless and sweet. For treating me with so much love, for my awesome vegetarian meal, for running to get ice for my ankle, for reminding me to stop shooting, for trusting me. You guys are such a beautiful couple and I wish you a lifetime of beautiful moments together.

Koranne & Brett. Wedding.

I sat for a long time, wondering how to best put into words what Koranne & Brett are about. They are like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle you didn’t think to put together, but when you do, sparks fly. And it’s the perfect fit. Hanging out with these two make my cheeks hurt, from smiling so much, that is. Humor may be that secret ingredient, but not without the incredible amount of devotion and acceptance.

I am so happy they are a family.

One of my favorite moments in their Big Day was the ‘first look’ they decided to do with my suggestion. As Brett was fidgeting with a fur tree branch in their front yard, Koranne slowly floated up behind him, to tap him on the shoulder and let him savour the first look at the beautiful bride … all before the ceremony!

It was amazing to see their friends and family gathered in their backyard for the ceremony, where the couple exchanged their vows under the rich August sun. For the champagne-popping with the bridal party, we decided to go back to the same barnyard where we did their [engagement photos]. This was a ton of fun, especially when the girls followed me into an abandoned shed for a photo… I’m still not sure who was more scared, but I’m leaning towards the pigeon in the attic, who almost raised the roof before flying out of the doorway where the girls were standing!

I’m so grateful to call you friends - thank you for sharing your Wedding with us…
