WELCOME, I'M KATYA NOVA...

... and thanks for sharing my journey of documenting Love! You'll find updates here a few times a week, as I always have exciting things going on. I love to capture moments in their natural ambiance, without forcing or rushing them. I also love making those in front of my lens look and feel like movie stars.

Yoga, foreign films, and Italian red wine rock my world. I sing in the car and love traveling alone. I'm also most probably going to cry at your wedding...

I believe Green is the new Black. My passion and commitment to making the most sustainable choices means using the highest quality eco-friendly albums and prints.

Hart House Vancouver Wedding. Erin & Steve.

The first time I ever talked to Erin, something clicked. Her voice is so alive and kind - even though I couldn’t see her, I felt her smiling. As we chatted about their spontaneous decision to set the wedding date, Erin mentioned that she clicked on my website link because … she liked my name. Erin, it was that easy to win me over!

Erin and Steve’s ceremony was magical. The quiet November rain diffused the limousine’s bright headlights, collecting in a pool of yellow light on the wet asphalt. I ran from the church cover to sneak a peak at Erin - so beautiful, calm, glowing… Steve stood still at the altar, looking up to the sky, closing his eyes, filling his chest with anticipation and joy. Then their hands joined. And didn’t let go.

The intimate candlelit reception dinner at the Hart House was amazing to say the least. Erin confessed that she had a ton of fun picking out the wines to pair with each exquisite course, and it certainly showed. Just when I thought nothing in this world could tear me away from Mick’s plate of lobster ravioli, the sound of clinking glasses made me reach for my camera and bolt to Erin & Steve’s table. Lingering moments longer, a few warm words sounded, words from the heart, words from miles away, words timeless. I won’t lie about the lump in my throat. And the tears of happiness for these two.

Thank you, thank you for sharing your amazing night with us making us feel like family! Congratulations… and Erin: here’s the ‘evidence‘  :)

Tamara. Lifestyle Portraits.

If people had faith in each other and loved life the way Tamara does, this world would undoubtedly be a better place. When I see her, I just wish her ‘mojo’ would somehow rub off on me :) We finally met for lunch at Sugar Bowl one beautiful afternoon, a few days before I left to conquer the hearts of Vancouver brides.

What a beautiful memory… we even got a great inside joke out of it - the garlickiest hummus we’ve ever ever had… Jeez! I felt like we could both slay dragons and vampires just by yawning! Good thing neither one of us had to kiss any boys that day. And if we did, it would not have been pretty.

Tamara, I’m so blessed to call you my friend…

Featured Vancouver Wedding Photographer

So I’ve been making Vancouver a home. The city has been kind and welcoming - with only one parking ticket and two broken umbrellas thus far! As a new Vancouver wedding photographer, I’ve met some awesome friends and have been lucky to get featured in the Vancouver Wedding Photographers community. Big thank you to Tracy Heppner for the little spot in the sunshine!

With one more wedding to go this year, I feel so grateful for new beginnings as a wedding photographer in Vancouver… There are so many projects I’m burning to share! And of course, a whole lot of Love.

Deborah Ledon. Showtime.

Her smile would light up blocks. Her heart is full and giving… overflowing with humanity, passion, and Cuban sassiness. Spilling Inside Out … which, ironically, is the name of her latest album. Wherever you are, Deborah Ledon has a way of making you feel like you’re home.

Deborah and I have been planning a lifestlyle shoot, and she casually invited me to come check out her show. Unbeknownst to her, I was in the mood for a little paparazzi session that night! You can almost hear her, drowning out the noise and amplifying your heartbeat. I feel so blessed to know this magnificent woman…

Congratulations, Deborah Ledon & her talented band will be representing at the Olympics in a few short months!

Sherry & Matt. Engagement.

They came by my booth at the Fall Vancouver Bridal Show - and before they even left, I was Sherry & Matt’s wedding photographer. I couldn’t be more honored - they are such a beautiful couple. So sharp, funny, and real. Their story has always been knowing what they want and finding a way to get it - as Matt happily recalls, Sherry was the hottest girl in the Engineering Faculty… and he knew he wouldn’t be letting her go!

We decided not to wait till spring for our engagement shoot, relying on the mercy of this gloomy Vancouver Sunday - and it was a gorgeous one. I finally got my fix of shooting by the ocean (for now), and even got a little more than I bargained for, having relied on my rain boots to be ocean boots. To spice up the experience, we even had an ‘encounter’ with a lady who stripped down to her bathing suit for what seemed to be her regular November (!) afternoon swim. Somehow she found our presence on the beach intrusive… Perhaps she was getting her groove on for the Olympics :) Nothing could spoil our mood, set to the soothing ocean murmur and Buddha Bar beats from by little boom box. I couldn’t wait to share some of my favorites with you!

To Matt & Sherry - you guys rock and I can’t wait to document your wedding next May! Love, K.

Sunday Confessions. 15.

Inspired by your love, created by mine…

Jen & Steve Bebb of Bebb Studios hosted Vancouver’s first SmugMug meeting this past Wednesday, and I felt so lucky to be a part of this awesome beginning. The crowd was great, and it didn’t take long for the cozy room to start buzzing with warm words and sincere handshakes. Jeff of SmugMug opened the floor by introducing the community spirit and cracking a few jokes :)

Thanks Jen for your inspiration to blog my season’s favorites… And what a challenge to boil them down to 15!

This is my favorite hands down. My best friend is getting married on my birthday…

bw bridal vancouver wedding photosI usually abstain from calling anything ‘epic,’ but this photo really has been, for my business.

katya nova vancouver weddingsIt was pouring outside. Buckets, cats, dogs & all. We were is an old barnyard and Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ was playing on my boom box. It was wild.

nova bridal vancouver photographerThis shot was taken moments before the First Look. Koranne gave me more pizzaz than I could have even hoped for, and rocked it out like a true Nova Bride.

bride on wedding day vancouver portraitPaige floated about like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn. So much grace and poise. It was starting to rain and we were about 5 min running distance from shelter, but Paige didn’t even stir, trusting that I would get the shot. Soon. The wind was blowing pretty heavily to the left, so I had my assistant Kemi pull the veil to the right and then let go so that I could catch it in mid-air!

couture bridal photography vancouverRob and I were having a conversation through the half-open door, as I was looking for good light. This is what I saw when I glanced over - and couldn’t resist. In fact, the first frame I shot only had ‘lieve’ visible, so I had to nonchalantly push the door a bit wider - to reveal the sign hanging above the bed of one of his groomsmen :) And could the light get any more perfect?!

groom getting ready bwNot a new concept by any means, but it was so spontaneous and fun! After a ‘french’ picnic of baguette, cheese, olives, and … champagne, we kicked off our shoes for some fun in the fountain. The setting August sun was tastefully diffused by the trees…

fun bridal day after photo sessionOk, the secret is out - I love giving a bit of direction and making it look like I’m catching my subjects in a more or less candid moment. Kathy looked so elegant in the white robe, so I asked her to go hang out at the foot of the bed… In the few moments of experimenting with the width of the space between the shutters, the whole gang of bridesmaids gathered behind me, curious to see why I was kneeling in such an awkward spot. ‘Awwwwww,’ I heard from them in unison - they were snapping away too!

bride getting ready wedding photographerI love the flare. And the love. This photo was taken the night before their wedding - this was the sunset marking the beginning of a new journey together. Did I mention I loooove flare?

engagement photos with flare vancouverThe sun hid for a few seconds for me to catch this shot. The air was heavy with the promise of rain. I shouted out ‘runaway bride‘ to Sarah just before releasing the shutter. The old Ukrainian-German farm was also amazing…

black white blidal field nova photographyI just love what’s going on. Not even sure how, but I convinced them to cozy up on the bed! As I looked around the room, I noticed a Marilyn Monroe calendar. Done!

unique engagement vancouver photographerClean-up on aisle four!!! Not quite… But we definitely made the day for a few bored Sobeys employees.

day after creative session vancouver‘No worries, I’m insured,’ I chuckled nervously, as Kristina and I made our way up to the second floor of this abandoned farmhouse. Every step creaked and squeaked, and I kept repeating in my head … ‘please don’t scream if you see a mouse, please don’t scream if you see a little mouse’ - all clear, we were safe. And it was so worth it! This photo was one of my favorites, we found this antique violin case…

edgy bridal portraits vancouverI think this is the kind of a moment little girls dream of when they imagine their dream wedding day. I love the energy of the shot. I was up at the front with them, and realized the bride and groom had turned around and were quickly walking towards the church front doors! I don’t think I tripped anyone… but I busted my butt to make sure I got to the door first!

wedding ceremony black whiteHana created this magic all by herself. So inspiring. Doesn’t she make you wonder what it is that she’s seeing out of that window?!

Sunday Confessions. Neighborhood.

When I was a little girl, I loved walking through the golden fallen leaves, rustling and crunching, watching out for the most colorful and symmetrical ones to take home and put between pages of books. Yesterday I did just that, after so many years. This time I’m an ocean away. This time I can hear the ocean waves murmuring. I’m home.

Mick and I went for a walk yesterday and I took my camera along - here are a few snapshots of why I feel so incredibly happy and serene!

As we walked along Sunset Beach, we witnessed a scene that’s still making me chuckle - on the front steps of a luxurious Beach Avenue high-rise condo building there stood a young clean-cut gentleman wearing … a royal housecoat. At 4 o’clock in the afternoon. He was talking on his cell phone and looking out to a slowly approaching black car with tinted windows. Then it came out of nowhere from one of the two guys riding on bicycles past us -”Millionaire!!!” … Maybe it was his Halloween costume.
